Alexine is a US citizen who grew up in São Paulo, Brazil, and has conducted conservation-related research in a variety of tropical environments since the mid 1980s. Alexine’s interest are in Wildlife and behavioral ecology, Conservation Biology, Plant-Animal interaction, and Sustainable Conservation.
Education. Alexine has a Ph.D. from the Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology program at the University of Nevada, a Master’s in Wildlife Management from West Virginia University, and a BA in Zoology from Drew University.
Professional experience. Alexine was field director of Earthwatch Institute’s Conservation Research Initiative in the Pantanal from 2000 to 2005, and was a visiting researcher at UNIDERP from 2005 to 2007. Her research experience includes studies of primates as part of the “Minimum Critical Size of Ecosystems” project in Amazonas, an investigation of the endangered Black Lion Tamarin in the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo state, and long-term investigations of white-lipped and collared peccary populations in the highly fragmented Atlantic forest and the Pantanal basin.
As a result of her publications and field work, she was nominated the Brazilian representative at the IUCN Pigs, Peccaries and Hippos Specialist Group. More recently, she has been leading groundbreaking research on white lipped peccary population genetics, using microsatellites to evaluate the degree of genetic variability and population structure of white-lipped peccaries in the southern Pantanal.
Coordinator since 2005 of the WCS Pantanal Project, “Improving Ranching Efficiency to Protect Biodiversity in the Brazilian Pantanal”, Alexine coordinates a team of scientists to implement a project that involves cattle ranchers, and the conservation of large tracts of land. Alexine and her team are the first to empirically and scientifically document and demonstrate the consequences of poor and best ranch management practices on a wide variety of environmental indicators, including frugivores, aquatic systems, vegetation, etc. Great expectation and excellent institutional / policy influence has been achieved, including partnerships with key governmental agencies, universities, and NGOs. There is great potential of extending the reach of the program to the whole state.
